Hi Michael, Here's a few more that weren't mentioned yet:
Experian (Marketshare)
Thomas Register (manufacturing plus...)
Thompson (Gale products - like you see in the library)
Omnigraphics (again - like you see in the library)
InfoChase
Hill Donnelly
VNU
Reed/Elsevier
Bernard C. Harris
Many international publishers like Europages
Import / Export directories...
Any BTB YPs from the SBC, Verizon, Dex's of the world
etc....

The directory / database publishing market is over $4.5 Billion dollar industry with many players. Some publishers are stronger than others in certain areas, everyone compiles data from different sources (most start from the Yellow Pages as a primary source and enhance it from there), most of the big players are buying independents (like D&B's purchase of Harris InfoSource, infoUSA acquisitions of many companies).

The real question is what data are you looking for and how are you going to use it? Are you looking for a do-it-yourself solution or a list manager? Are you looking local, national or international? What variables are necessary? Sales volume, contacts, zip code, types of companies, SIC code / yellow page heading, etc?

An optimal solution depends on what your needs are. Say I want to do a mailing to every business in my zip code, you can purchase the Hill Donnelly Cross Reference Directory and download all the business listings, no additional cost whereas infoUSA would charge you per record ($0.10-0.25). Now if I needed all IT directors from manufacturing companies with over $20 million in sales volume in my zip code, that's another story, neither is going to do the trick.
