Marketing tips from my notes- Tip 1&2Views: 1367

Hello Everyone,
I am back from 40 days of quite time, while I was touring around the world. Great discussions going on the board. I thought of sharing some of my notes with all of you.
Please feel free to comment.

Each of the following Ten Marketing Tips (I would be posting one or two a day) is based on a highly effective - but often overlooked marketing tactic. How many are you using? How many have you overlooked?

Tip 1
Insulate yourself against the impact of change by increasing the number of products and services you offer ...and by using a variety of different marketing methods. Only a small portion of your total business will be affected if the sales of one product declines or the response to one marketing method drops.

Tip 2
Customers are prospects too. Stay in contact with them. Find or develop other products or services you can offer them. It's easier to make a sale to a previous customer than to someone who never bought from you.

Any comments.

Priya,

I can agree with Tip #2, but I am not so sure about Tip #1. Perhaps I do not fully understand Tip #1. Are you saying that in order for a company to remain in business, the product and/or services provided must increase or change? Is this supposed to be applicable to EVERY business or just retailers? I am not so sure every business can afford to make such innovations.

I agree with Lamar. I believe in insulating myself by having several clients; however, I have expertise in one niche. It's my niche that draws business and helps me to target my pricing, services, and continuously improve on them. If I try to be 'all' to 'all', it puts me in direct competition with all the other folks out there.

Lamar,
The tip # 2 applies to every business:
Tip 2
Customers are prospects too. Stay in contact with them. Find or develop other products or services you can offer them. It's easier to make a sale to a previous customer than to someone who never bought from you.

Simply because there is always room for better service, customize support and additional need on the part of client. you don't always have to have completely new product or service. But stagnation with your offeringis not good. May be someone else can explain it a little better.

Here is the next set of tipes:

Tip 3
Avoid making any claim that sounds exaggerated ...even if it is true.

A bold claim creates doubt in your prospect's mind and jeopardizes the sale. Reduce any bold claims to a more believable level.

Tip 4
Express numerical claims as odd numbers with fractions or decimals. For example, "Our clients save 17.7 percent" sounds more believable than "Our clients save 20 percent" ...even if 20 percent is the accurate number.

(do not mean to deceive anyone but slight changes in presentation do work better)

Thanks

Priya,

I disagree with tip Number #4. Honesty and integrity is important in business and in life. Your credibility as a business depends upon it. If the savings is 20%, why state it as less - at a fraction? Do you think using a fraction - which is not totally accuracte - is somehow more credible?

Please do not misunderstand. I am all over being "clever" when it comes to promotions. However, dishonesty in a promotion - no matter how cleverly presented - is simply not acceptable to me.

I'm sorry.

But these tips are supposed to be coming from a Business Advisor.

I don't agree with them, and I certainly think the quoting a different number one is way off the mark; and totally useless.

Thought at first you were just making general observations about 'Product Mix', Tip #1, which are the basics you learn on any business course.

My qualification is in both business ownership and business management, and is from UK Chamber of Commerce, so I do know, like the others here, what I'm talking about.

If people follow these tips they will, at best, be no better off than before but, maybe, will do their business-knowledge some severe harm. If you get my meaning.

[really sorry, don't like to be this negative - and i make a habit of leaving posts I don't agree with alone (rather than interfering). But this is really touching a nerve, when there are so many honest people who qualify or prove themselves in a track-record] Also, sorry all other ryze people.

I think I've seen these before... was it in an Enron Employee Guide? Think so!
